The Evolution of Technology in Plant Care
Image: StoryMaps. (2025).
The history and evolution of technology in plant care, agriculture, horticulture, and permaculture reflect humanity’s ongoing quest to cultivate the land more efficiently and sustainably. Early agriculture began with simple tools and techniques for planting and irrigation, evolving over millennia with the advent of plows, crop rotation, and selective breeding. The Industrial Revolution marked a turning point, introducing mechanization, chemical fertilizers, and pesticides that drastically increased yields (Mazoyer & Roudart, 2006).
In horticulture, innovations in greenhouse technology, hydroponics, and automated irrigation systems enhanced precision and plant health. Meanwhile, permaculture emerged in the 1970s as a response to the environmental impact of industrial agriculture, advocating for regenerative practices rooted in ecological principles (Perkir, 2024).
Today, digital technologies such as drones, AI-driven soil sensors, and smart farming platforms are transforming these fields, “enabling real-time monitoring, data-driven decision-making, and automation” (Alamandi, 2025) as well as nanobiotic advances for sustainable land management at unprecedented scales.
